Squid Game vs Alice in Borderland: Half Tongue

On the occasion of Netflix preparing for the premiere of Alice in Borderland season 2 later this year, I immediately plowed back to season 1 and must admit that all feelings and admiration for this series are still the same as before. head. Every aspect of a survival game-themed movie is presented in an exemplary textbook, and most importantly, it is far superior when compared to Squid Game . In this article, let's analyze why Alice in Borderland is better quality and deserves to be known by more people.

In my opinion, the first element that every movie exploiting this theme must put on top is survival games. It can be said that these games act as the soul of the movie. The more attractive and dramatic they are, the more impressed the audience is. In this regard, both Alice in Borderland and Squid Game are very diverse when it comes to intellectual, physical and psychological games.

However, I clearly find Alice in Borderland 's games more convincing, because their logic is guaranteed to be clearer than Squid Game . We all know that with every game there will be rules that everyone must follow if they do not want to be disqualified. Alice in Borderland sets those rules very closely, without any loopholes for players to circumvent the rules. Everything is fair, if you win, it's due to strength, not luck. The way that players break each challenge is also what makes viewers admire because it is so excellent.

Looking at Squid Game , everywhere I see moments when players casually cheat without having to receive any punishment. In the red light game, just hiding behind other people can freely move without fear of being scanned by the sensor. In the game of Dalgona, they use lighters to make it easy to separate the candies. Meanwhile, the game of going through the glass bridge is clearly based on luck and does not show anything about the character's qualities. Ah, I forgot there was a glassmaker but he was quickly removed because now it's the organizers' turn to cheat. The funniest part is that they initially preached that this was fair game for everyone. In the end, power is the only thing that doesn't exist in the world of the Squid Game .

From here, we have a second problem, which is the connection between the main character, the survival game and the social message. Once again, Alice in Borderland shows the rigor in the story and how the script is built.

The main character Arisu is introduced as a complete loser, with no job, no purpose in life, all day long in the house playing games. He is suddenly transported to the world of Borderland, forced to participate in dangerous games to win lives that are only counted in days. During that process, Arisu experiences a lot of loss, causing him to completely change. Through that, the film wants to shed light on the question: "What is our reason for living?" . Not just Arisu, every character in Alice in Borderlandare all mirrors that reflect that message and are closely related to their journey. The challenges in the movie are not just an innocuous game, but they represent the motto of life, the answers of the leaders to the topic question I mentioned above.

What about Squid Game ? If games don't reflect the characters' personalities or, above all, the thoughts of the characters, then what's the point of their existence? They have little to do with the social message the film is trying to address, which is the growing problem of household debt in Korean society. The characters after coming out of the game also don't seem to have any development and it really makes the movie's message cliché.

And the last factor I think Alice in Borderland does better than Squid Game is the character system. They have a very diverse background, the past story is extremely interesting and of course they are all exploited from a common frame of reference to serve the main theme.

To sum up, Squid Game may become a global phenomenon with terrible numbers, but the quality is clearly far from Alice in Borderland . The success of the Korean series can also be considered "fragrant" after Parasite won at the Oscars, helping the country's cinema reach the world. It is also impossible to ignore Netflix's aggressive marketing for Squid Game that has helped the film reach more people. I find it a pity that the popularity of Alice in Borderland is not good despite the excellent quality of the content.
